Pion SCX on deuterim at low energies

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:374778
The authors used the Neutral Meson Spectrometer at LAMPF to measure the inclusive SCX reaction d({pi}{sup {minus}},{pi}{sup 0})nn at energies of 65 and 96.5 MeV. Earlier experiments at 164, 263, 371, and 500 MeV have shown a cross section lower than that of free hydrogen, especially at forward angles. The authors set the spectrometer to central angles of 0 and 90 degrees at each energy, the acceptance being 50 degrees in their geometry. The target was CD{sub 2}, with secondary targets of carbon and CH{sub 2} for normalization. To that end they also employed {sup 11}C activation in concert with Monte Carlo simulation. Preliminary angular distributions are to be presented and compared to both free hydrogen cross-sections and to modifications required by the Pauli principle.
