Elastic {pi}{sup +} scattering on polarized {sup 3}He

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:374775

The authors measured asymmetries, A{sub y}, for {pi}{sup +} - {sup 3}He elastic scattering at incident energies T{pi} = 100, 142, 180, and 256 MeV and laboratory scattering angles from 40{degrees} to 100{degrees}. With increasing energy the A{sub y} are predicted to become sensitive to the details of the reaction model. The measurements were done at LAMPF using a high-density, optically-pumped {sup 3}He gas target and a magnetic spectrometer. The angular distributions at T{pi} = 100, 142, and 180 MeV show large positive A{sub y} near 80{degrees} with the maximum shifted to higher angles than predicted by first-order optical model calculations. The sign of A{sub y} near 80{degrees} is observed to change between T{pi} = 180 and 256 MeV. At 180 MeV and below the A{sub y} are relatively large and negative at angles near 60{degrees}, in contrast to several first-order calculations which predict small positive A{sub y}. A preliminary calculation suggests that these negative asymmetries are a signature of the Delta-neutron spin-spin interaction.
