Precision measurements of pp spin correlation at 200 MeV with internal polarized hydrogen target

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:374770
The first series of measurements with an internal polarized hydrogen gas target in a medium-energy proton storage ring has been completed. The results demonstrate the feasibility of precision p-p spin-correlation measurements by this method. Data will be presented to demonstrate that errors caused by background and by various systematic errors (e.g. effect of guide field reversal) are well below the statistical error of 0.01. Spin correlation parameters A{sub xx}, A{sub yy}, and A{sub xz} for p-p scattering in the angular range 6-18{degrees} at 200 MeV proton energy have been deduced. The new data are about an order of magnitude more accurate than the best previous measurements in this energy region. Extension of the measurements to smaller angles and to longitudinally polarized beam will be discussed.
