Charm production in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies to O({alpha}{sup 3}{sub s})
The author presents results for the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of inclusive charm production in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. These calculations include the next-to-leading order, O({alpha}{sub s}{sup e}) radiative corrections and the nuclear shadowing effect. Using these calculations, the author determined the effective (in-medium) K-factor for thr differential and total charm cross sections. He found that this K-factor has a rapidity and a transverse momentum dependence. He found the fraction of central and inelastic events that contain at least one charm quark pair at RHIC and LHC energies. The author discusses all of the theoretical uncertainties that appear in his calculations. In particular, he shows that the different extrapolations of gluon densities in a nucleon and in a nucleus to the low-x region can introduce large theoretical uncertainties in the calculation.
