Gas-lift (GL) installation design calculations and examples are presented in GL manuals, text books and other publications.Example calculations range from very simplified to detailed designs requiring accurate well information and gas-rate throughput performance for the gas-lift valves (GLVs). Unfortunately, the actual GL installation does not always operate as predicted. Certain wells will require more injection gas and produce less fluid than the other wells in the same injection-gas system. The poorer performing wells have the same fluid properties and may have similar or better productivity characteristics. The objective of this paper is to discuss several design and operating procedures that can prevent unloading a well, lead to heading and surging, and other considerations that cause excessive injection-gas usage and lower than predicted production rates.
