This simulation`s purpose was to estimate the fuel economies of various automobile drive systems using a ceramic gas turbine, under the assumption that it has a thermal efficiency of 40% at its design point. The types of vehicles selected for simulation were a city bus, a 2-t light-duty truck, and a passenger car. The systems studied were: (1) a direct drive with single-shaft ceramic gas turbine (CGT); (2) that with twin-shaft CGT; (3) a series-hybrid; (4) a parallel-hybrid; and (5) a conventional system with a reciprocating engine. It appeared from these simulations that significant improvement in fuel economy could be attained by using a CGT in a hybrid system.
