Experimental results are presented on the mechanical behavior of semisolid spray cast Al-4.5 w/oCu and 2014 Al at high volume fractions of solid (0.5--1.0) and strain rates in the range of 0.1--1/s under simple unconstrained compression. At very high fractions of solid (> 0.8) the deformation is not homogeneous because strain localization occurs as a result of local softening caused by breaking of bonds between solid grains. For volume fractions in the range 0.5--0.8 there is no trace of strain localization in the microstructure. For all volume fractions of solids examined there is no visible macrosegregation of liquid and solid phases. Characteristics of the stress-strain curve are related to mechanisms of solid grain motion and microstructural characteristics. Semisolid spray cast materials are suitable for semisolid processing since they deform at very low stresses due to their fine equiaxed grain structure and the absence of dendrites.
