Degradation of the protective properties during exposure to natural (Port Hueneme, CA and Key West, FL) and artificial seawater has been monitored for 13 coating systems applied to steel using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), electrochemical noise analysis (ENA) and visual observation. Statistical methods have been used to determine the effects of the nature of the primer and the topcoat as well as the impact of bacteria on corrosion protection of steel by polymer coatings.
