Preparation and dynamic mechanical properties of sulfonated polystyrene ionomers
- South China Univ. of Technology, Guangzhou (China)
Lightly sulfonated Polystyrene (SPS) is generally prepared by reacting acetyl sulfate with polystyrene in dichloroethane solution. In this paper, sulfonated polystyrenes (PSSSA) containing up 10 mol% content of SO{sub 3}H group have been prepared in cyclohexane solution using a mixed sulfuric acid and propinic anhydride as sulfonating agent. The conditions of optimized sulfonation are as follows: the mole ratio of sulfuric acid {divided_by} propinic anhydride = 1/1 and sulfonation time = 2 h at 50{degrees}C. Dynamic mechanical analyses show that Tgs of PSSSNa ionomer matrix are independent of ionic content in the range of 10 mol%, different from that of SPS Na sulfonated in dichloroethane solution. Microstructure of PSSSK ionomer was observed using TEM. The diameter of ionic domain, approximately 10 nm, is larger than that of SPSNa.
