In this paper, the structure and mechanical properties for blends of sulfonated polystyrene with polyurethane containing a tertiary amine group were investigated. Dynamic mechanical results show that the miscibility of blends is improved distinctly due to ion-ion interaction. MDSC studies indicate that the miscibility as well as soft segment purity of blends enhances with the increase of SO{sub 3}H group content in SPS. The stress-strain curve of SPS/PU (50/50) blend shows the cold-drawing behavior. The synergism of tensile strength occurs in whole range of composition. There is a maximum value around 50 wt% content of SPS (the equivalent point of functional group). The tensile strength of SPS/PU (30/70) enhances with the SO{sub 3}H group content increasing and the elongation decreases up to 4.8 mol%, then levels off. It is due to the increase of ionic crosslinking density caused by ion interaction and the formation of cluster in SPS.
