Segmented polyurethanes are widely used as high performance materials and their properties can be tailored by variation of their components. However, applications of polyurethanes are somewhat limited by their high flammability. Phosphorus containing polymers have been known to exhibit the primary advantage of flame retardancy for many years. Some of the systems are reported on poly(arylene ether)s, polyimide, polyamide and epoxy, etc. in our laboratory, but detailed studies on polyurethanes had not been initiated. In this study, a series of new phosphorus-containing polyurethanes were synthesized based upon poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) soft segments and hard segments of 4,4{prime}-diphenyl methane diisocyanate which were chain extended with bis(3-aminophenyl)methyl phosphine oxide (DAMPO) and/or butane diol(BD). The resulting materials were well characterized with respect to important polymer parameters. Each as molecular weight, chemical composition, transition behavior and basic mechanical properties. The results suggest that it is possible to achieve an improved char yield while maintaining reasonable mechanical properties.
