Collision induced dissociation experiments have been conducted on various Pt{sub m}(CO){sub n}{sup -} (m=2-6 and n=0-9) cluster anions in the gas phase. For the Pt{sub 4}(CO){sub n}{sup -} (n=1-6) series the first three carbonyl ligands bind to the platinum center with about two electron volts of energy each, whereas the second three ligands each have a binding energy of about one electron volt. Similarly, the first four ligands of the Pt{sub 4}(CO){sub n}{sup -} (n=1-8) series are bound by about two electron volts and the second four are bound by about one electron volt. It is surmised from this and other information that the first set of ligands form bridging bonds while the second set ligands form terminal bonds. The dissociation energies for the loss of a metal atom from Pt{sub m}{sup -} (m=3-5) are about four electron volts indicating large metal-metal bond strengths. Currently we are examining the Pt{sub m}O{sub n}{sup -} series of clusters.
