A comparative reassessment of PT/KL-zeolite catalysts
- Yale Univ. New Haven, CT (United States)
Pt/KL-zeolite has unique catalytic selectivity for aromatization of n-hexane. To gain insight into the catalytic properties of this material we have compared Pt/KL-zeolite with several cation exchanged analogs and with Pt/KY-zeolite and Pd/KL-zeolite, i.e., varying the counter ion, zeolite structure and metal. Neopentane was used as a probe reaction with the objective of quantifying the effects of relative acidity and the relevant metal-zeolite interaction in the several catalysts. The catalysts were further characterized by hydrogen and oxygen chemisorption, TPD and EXAFS. Similarly, Pr/KL-zeolite was compared to Pt/KAl-MCM-41 using n-hexane aromatization as the probe reaction. The objective of this comparison is to assess the effect of varying the parallel channel pore diameter from 7.1 {Angstrom} (KL-zeolite) through a range of 15-22 {Angstrom} (KAl-MCM-41) on activity, selectivity and deactivation. Both kinds of comparisons point to dominant effect of the Pt cluster/L-zeolite interaction relative to transport and shape effects of the pores of L-zeolite.
