Mechanisms of gas permeation in porous inorganic membranes
- Worcester Polytechnic Institute, MA (United States)
The permeation of gases in inorganic porous membranes is reviewed. The transport mechanisms in porous inorganic membranes include molecular and Knudsen diffusion, surface diffusion, capillary condensation and configurational diffusion. The theory of diffusion and permeation in microporous molecular-sieve membranes is described. The developed expression for permeability coefficient is used to predict the upper bounds of the He permeability coefficient. The similarity between permeation in microporous molecular-sieve membranes and the diffusion in zeolites is demonstrated by comparing the limiting value of diffusion coefficients in zeolites with that in microporous molecular-sieve membranes.
