The process chemistry of mercury was evaluated in the proposed TRU separations flowsheet using acidic sodium-bearing waste (SBW) simulant spiked with stable and radioactive mercury ({sup 203}Hg) and the TRUEX solvent (0.2 M octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide and 1.4 M tributylphosphate diluted in Isopar-L). This evaluation resulted in a proposed SBW treatment process which allowed for the concomitant extraction of mercury with the TRUs followed by selective stripping of mercury with nitric acid or sodium carbonate. The scope of this work was expanded, and the fundamental chemistry of mercury was evaluated with the TRUEX solvent. Kinetic and thermodynamic properties of the mercury reaction with the individual components of the TRUEX solvent were determined. Results from these tests indicate the extraction of mercury to be rapid and dependent upon the chloride concentration. Four species of mercuric chloride, HgCl{sup -}, HgCl{sub 2}, HgCl{sub 3}{sup -}, and HgCl{sub 4}{sup -2}, extract differently into the TRUEX solvent and the speciation of mercury in solution is liven by the chloride and acid concentrations. Classical slope analysis of the mercury distribution coefficient as a action of CMPO, TBP, or chloride concentration was performed to determine the extractable mercury species, reaction stoichiometries, and equilibrium constants.
