The objective of this work is to determine the feasibility of using potassium permanganate to destroy or defunctionalize organic complexants in tank waste supernatant to facilitate metals removal. Parameters considered during this testing included dry permanganate addition versus permanganate solution addition (i.e., wet addition), operating time, permanganate concentration, operating temperature, and chelating organic source. The effects of permanganate addition upon total organic carbon, nitrite and distribution of {sup 90}Sr, {sup 241}Am, and {sup 238,239,240}Pu as well as bulk metals between the supernatant and solid phases will be discussed. In addition, the simulant and actual waste test results will be compared.
