A solvent-extraction process for removing technetium-99 as pertechnetate anion from alkaline tank waste-media has been developed. The crown ether bis-4,4{prime}(5{prime})[(tert-butyl)cyclohexano]-18-crown-6 dissolved in TBP-modified aliphatic kerosene has been tested on simulated tank wastes from the DOE`s Hanford and Oak Ridge sites, as well as on actual tank waste from Oak Ridge`s Melton Valley Storage facility. The extraction solvent can be regenerated by stripping with water. A flowsheet for a multistage extraction and stripping process will be presented.
