New adsorbents for olefin-paraffin separation have been synthesized by effective dispersion of Ag(I) and Cu(I) cations on substrates that have hydrocarbon-phobic surfaces. These cations bind olefin molecules by a {pi}-complexation bond - a weak chemical bond. For acetylene separations, we have prepared a new type of sorbent by monolayer dispersion of Ni{sup 2+} or Co{sup 2+} on {gamma}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} which has high selectivity and reversibility for acetylene (C{sub 2}H{sub 2}) over other hydrocarbons, also through {pi}-complexation. The {pi}-complexation bonds, as well as the effects of anions and substrates on these bonds, are understood from molecular orbital calculation results.
