Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) have the potential to eliminate volatile organic compounds in certain separation processes by providing two immiscible aqueous layers for liquid/liquid extraction. The challenge lies in finding suitable metal ion extractants which complex the metal ion producing a water soluble species that partitions to the aqueous PEG-rich phase rather then to the aqueous salt-rich phase. We are currently investigating modified short chain PEG diacids which may be useful for this purpose including 3,6-dioxaheptanoic acid, 3,6,9-trioxadecanoic acid, 3,6,9-trioxaundecanoic diacid, polyglycolic diacid, and PEG-600 diacid. This presentation will focus on the solid state structural evidence for metal ion complexes of these PEG-dicarboxylic acids.
