Sorption of uranium in a system containing kaolinite and natural organic matter - a comparison of model and laboratory results

Much research has been conducted on the sorption of lanthanides and actinides to natural materials. These studies have largely focused on sorption in simple systems or whole soils. In order to better predict the transport and remediation of these constituents, the gap between the study of simple systems and whole soil behavior must be reduced. We have studied the sorption of uranyl ion in a system containing isolated naturally occurring dissolved organic matter (DOM) and kaolinite. Laboratory data on the sorption of uranyl ion, with and without DOM and as a function of pH and backing electrolyte concentration, will be presented. A variety of sorption models were fit to laboratory data from simple systems containing DOM/kaolinite and uranyl/kaolinite to develop stability constants. These simple system constants were used to model the more complex system containing DOM/kaolinite/uranyl. Model results from the more complex system will be compared to laboratory data.
