Aqueous complexation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenolate by lead and cadmium
- McGill Univ., Montreal (Canada)
The fate of metals and chlorophenols occurring together as groundwater contaminants may be significantly affected by the extent of complexation between them. However, few studies have examined these interactions. In light of this, the complexation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenolate (TCP) by lead and cadmium has been studied at 25{degrees}C. The activity of the free metal was monitored with an ion-selective electrode as a function of pH and total TCP concentration. The data indicate that aqueous Pb-TCP and Cd-TCP complexation occurs, and we interpret the experimental data in terms of a single 1:1 complex in each system. The stability constants for the Pb(TCP){sup +} and Cd(TCP){sup +} complexes are calculated to be 10{sup 2.9} and 10{sup 2.5} respectively. Calculations using these stability constants suggest that metal-chlorophenolate complexation can drastically alter metal and/or chlorophenol mobilities in contaminated groundwater systems.
