The feasibility of regenerating and reusing lime employed as a sorbent for SO{sub x} in a circulating fluidized bed combustor fired with petroleum coke was investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). A sample of limestone supplied to an industrial boiler was utilized as well as samples of bed ash and fly ash from the boiler. Each sample was subjected to a number of sulfation and regeneration cycles. During the sulfation step the sample was treated at 900{degrees}C with an SO{sub 2}-bearing gas and during the regeneration step it was treated with a reducing gas. The results indicated that it would be feasible to regenerate and recycle the sulfated bed ash produced by burning petroleum coke in a fluidized bed of limestone particles. Although the extent of sulfation of the particles declined as the number of sulfation and regeneration cycles increased, it was still possible to convert 30% or more of the CaO to CaSO{sub 4} after five cycles.
