A comparison of the reactivities of different carbons for nitric oxide reduction
A review of the literature on reduction of NO by carbons reveals a great variability in reported rates and kinetic behavior. There is no systematic variation of reported rates with surface areas or inorganics content, though both clearly influence the rate. New experiments demonstrate that surface area can be a key factor, but systematic trends are seen in relatively unreactive carbons and {open_quotes}old{close_quotes} chars. Of considerable importance is the extent to which a carbon has been heat treated. In the above respects, reaction with NO is similar to reaction with most other oxidizing gases. One key difference m the case of NO oxidation is a clearly observable shift in rate controlling mechanisms in the middle of the temperature range of interest. This is not observed in most other oxidizing systems. Factors influencing this shift are explored.
