The release of NO{sub x} during coal combustion is a major environmental problem. In the new burner design technologies for minimisation of NO{sub x} emissions the main contributor to the NO{sub x} is the char nitrogen. In this investigation a series of carbons with varying nitrogen contents have been prepared by treatment with ammonia. The release of NO{sub x} was studied using a thermogravimatric analyser-mass spectrometer. The functionality in the carbon has been investigated by XANES. The conversion of char nitrogen to NO{sub x} has been studied in the relation to char structural characteristics, e.g. nitrogen functionality, and in particular reactivity towards NO and N{sub 2}O.
