Analysis of carbon-oxygen reaction by use of a square-input response technique and {sup 18}O isotope
- Kyoto Univ. (Japan)
A square-input response technique which we have recently presented was applied to analyze the oxygen gasification reaction of a carbon black and the stabilization reaction of pitch fibers. We mean by the square-input method that the reactant stream containing {sup 16}O{sub 2} is changed step-wisely to an {sup 18}O{sub 2} containing stream at t=t{sub 1} and the {sup 18}O{sub 2} stream is changed backwardly to the {sup 16}O{sub 2} stream at t=t{sub 2}. Tracing gaseous {sup 18}O containing species during the gasification of the carbon black, the gasification mechanism and the role of the chemisorbed oxygen could be elucidated. The importance of the direct reaction between gaseous oxygen and chemisorbed oxygen was clarified, and the relationship between the gasification rate and the amount of the chemisorbed oxygen could be established. This technique was successfully applied also to elucidate the mechanism of the carbon fiber stabilization reaction which produce a large amount of H{sub 2}O at less than 300{degrees}C.
