Fourier transform infrared-external reflectance spectroscopy (FTIR-ERS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of three mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) isomers on Au indicate that increasing proximity of the carboxylic acid group to the Au substrate changes the electronic environment of the benzene ring and carboxyl-group. We also used FTIR-ERS and thickness-shear-mode-resonators to study the reactivity of MBA SAMs during dosing with vapor-phase decylamine. Susceptibility to proton transfer decreases in the order 4{yields}3{yields}2-MBA. This talk will focus on how structure and surface-induced ordering impose constraints upon SAM reactivity.
