Interaction of CO with Pt and Rh supported on CeO{sub 2}(111) and ZrO{sub 2}(100) surfaces
- Univ. of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA (United States)
The structure and reactivity of Pt and Rh films supported on ZrO{sub 2}(100) and CeO{sub 2}(111) surfaces were studied using a combination of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). Metal films deposited from the vapor phase were found to grow in a layer-by-layer fashion on the ZrO{sub 2}(100) surface at 300 K and agglomerate into particles upon heating to 700 K. In contrast, particle formation occurred on the CeO{sub 2}(111) surface upon metal deposition at 300 K. HREELS was used to characterize the interaction of CO with the metal films. The results obtained for Pt/CeO{sub 2} and Rh/CeO{sub 2} were similar to those reported for the interaction of CO with the low index planes of the bulk metals. For metal particles supported on ZrO{sub 2}(100), however, the HREELS results provide evidence for CO species which bridge between the metal and the support. The role of these bridged bonded species in CO oxidation over supported metal catalysts will he discussed.
