Anisotropic processes on the calcite surface: Atomic force microscopy and kinetic Monte Carlo views of dissolution

The dissolution kinetics of the CaCO{sub 3}(1014) surface have been investigated using atomic force microscopy. These measurements were conducted in a solution cell where dissolution could be observed as a function of time and at different temperatures and flow conditions. Dissolution has been found to occur at straight steps on the surface which can be created by the formation of shallow pits. Depending upon the crystallographic direction of the step, the rates of dissolution differ by a factor of {approx}2.3. Impurities and flow conditions can cause the shape of a pit to vary from rhombohedral (straight sides) to partially round. A kinetic Monte Carlo model has been used to investigate the manner in which pit shape changes can be understood as consequences of atomistic dissolution rates.
