Gold supported on 3d transition metal oxides ({alpha}-Fe{sub 2}, TiO{sub 2}, etc.) can be compared favorably with supported Pd and Pt catalysts in the catalytic oxidation of CH{sub 3}OH, HCHO, and HCOOH. The supported gold catalysts are markedly active for CO oxidation at temperatures as low as -70{degrees}C and are much less active for H{sub 2} oxidation. This catalytic nature is applicable to polymer electrolyte fuel cells for automobiles. Gold supported on Mn{sub 2}O{sub 3} is especially active and selective in the CO removal from the reformed gas of CH{sub 3}OH. The genesis of the unique catalytic behavior of supported gold will be discussed to emphasize the role of perimeter between ultrafine gold particles and metal oxide supports.
