Gold supported on titanium oxide exhibit low-temperature catalytic activities and high selectivities in the vapor-phase oxidation of lower (C2-C4) alkanes and alkenes. Gold deposited on TiO{sub 2} with diameters ranging from 2 nm to 4 nm can catalyze the reactions of propene to propylene oxide, propane to acetone, and isobutane to t-butanol in hydrocarbon, oxygen, and hydrogen mixtures at temperatures of 300-400 K. On the catalysts with lower Au-loadings (<0.2wt%), and accordingly with smaller Au particles (diameter<2 nm), as on Pd and Pt supported on TiO{sub 2}, the hydrogenation of propene to form propane preferentially takes place. The strong structure-sensitivity in the catalysis of Au-TiO{sub 2} can be attributed to the active sites at the periphery between gold particles and TiO{sub 2} and a mechanism is proposed that hydrocarbons adsorbed on gold particles react with peroxo or hydroperoxo species formed on Ti cations.
