Electrochemical promotion of alkene oxidation by nitric oxide over platinum {beta} alumina
- Cambridge Univ., Cambridge (United Kingdom)
Catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons by NO is of importance with respect to control of emissions and the implementation of fuel-efficient lean-burn gasoline engines working at high air:fuel ratios. Electrochemical promotion (EP) of a metal catalyst can lead to dramatic and reversible changes in both activity and selectivity. Spillover ions pumped from a solid electrolyte modify the metal surface work function, thus influencing adsorption enthalpies and reaction activation energies : in effect one has in situ control over the working catalyst. EP of a Pt film on {beta}{double_prime} alumina reversibly increases the rate of ethylene oxidation by NO; the effect is large and may have technological significance. Parallel kinetic and spectroscopic studies with Pt(111)/Na indicate that the principal role of electrochemically-pumped Na is enhancement of NO dissociation on the Pt surface. The key surface species present under reaction conditions is sodium carbonate: this is the electrochemically-controlled promoter.
