Metal ions in solid and liquid materials can be extracted by supercritical CO{sub 2} containing a suitable ligand. Several different types of ligands including dithiocarbamates, {beta}-diketones, crown ethers, and organophosphorus reagents have been tested for their abilities to extract heavy metals in supercritical CO{sub 2}. Fluorine substituted ligands are particularly effective in supercritical fluid extraction because of the high solubilities of fluorinated metal chelates in CO{sub 2}. Factors affecting the extraction of heavy metals from solid and liquid samples are presented. Potential applications of this novel extraction technique for removing toxic metals from waste materials are discussed.
