The nitroarenes observed in ambient air result from combustion emissions and from in situ atmospheric formation. Gas-phase radical-initiated reactions of naphthalene, biphenyl and 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene result in nitroarene formation. The semivolatile nitroarene species formed are often present in ambient samples in concentrations significantly higher than those of the particle-associated nitroarenes. Ambient concentrations of nitroarenes measured in Southern California, and evidence for daytime hydroxyl (OH) radical-initiated and nighttime nitrate (NO{sub 3}) radical-initiated formation, will be presented.
