Laboratory research has demonstrated conclusively that under the right conditions, both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria can degrade chloroethenes completely to harmless by-products. More importantly, field demonstrations and pilot studies have demonstrated that in situ remediation of chloroethenes is not only feasible, but, when properly engineered, can be a cost-effective remediation approach. In situ remediation of chlorinated solvents has received broad support from both public and private sectors. The EPA, the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Department of Defense (DOD) have provided millions of dollars in research funding for the development of in situ bioremediation technologies for chlorinated solvents. Technologies have been evaluated as a part of the EPA Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) program. Industry has also invested millions of dollars for research and technology development.
