Bioremediation of contaminated harbor sediment. 3: Ecotoxicological aspects
- Univ. of Ghent (Belgium). Lab. for Biological Research in Aquatic Pollution
Different ex-situ microbial remediation techniques were assessed for the clean-up of harbor sediments contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, mineral oil and tributyltin (Zeebrugge, Belgium). Throughout this study, which consisted of a bench, pilot and full scale phase, the bioremediation efficiency and potential hazards of wastes and remediation by-products were assessed using a battery of acute toxicity tests. The bench scale remediation experiments performed in 1 liter aerobic complete mixed reactors, resulted in a 70 to 90% reduction in total PAH, mineral oil and TBT concentrations. However, samples taken from these experiments indicated significant increases (compared to the initial toxicity of the sediment) in acute toxicity of the reaction mixture. The influence of nutrient and surfactant addition, degradation by-products and wastes on the toxicity of the sediment suspension will be discussed. In the pilot scale study, performed in 40 m{sup 3} reactors, the contamination reductions observed in the first phase of the study were confirmed. This decrease coincided with a gradual reduction leading to a complete removal (after 2 months) of the acute and chronic toxicity (all test organisms) of the sediment suspension. Finally, ecotoxicological results of the full scale phase of this study i.e. the potential hazard of the post treatment water phase and the potential terrestrial toxicity of the sediment sludge after application of landfarming techniques will be presented.
