Double- and triple-resonance excitation schemes for the ionization of strontium are presented. Use of single-mode diode lasers for the resonance excitations provides a high degree of optical isotopic selectivity: with double-resonance, selectivity of {gt}10{sup 4} for {sup 90}Sr against the stable Sr isotopes has been demonstrated. Measurement of lineshapes and stable isotope shifts in the triple-resonance process indicate that optical selectivity should increase to {approximately}10{sup 9}. When combined with mass spectrometer selectivity this is sufficient for measurement of {sup 90}Sr at background environmental levels. Additionally, autoionizing resonances have been investigated for improving ionization efficiency with lower power lasers. {copyright} {ital 1998 American Institute of Physics.}
