This report describes the results of a study to evaluate ride-through options for AC adjustable-speed drives (ASDs). Using a programmable dynamometer to simulate different process loading characteristics, controlled laboratory tests were conducted at the EPRI Power Electronics Applications Center to characterize the different software programming options that are currently available in most AC drives. These options enable ASDs to be programmed for a desired response during a voltage sag. The test results provide useful information that correlates mechanical variables of an ASD-driven load, such as torque and speed, to variables of applied voltage sags and momentary voltage interruptions, namely magnitude and duration. Other test variables include specific ASD restart schemes and three basic load types: variable-torque, constant-torque, and constant-horsepower. Also evaluated was a commercially available boost converter, which is a ride-through technology for processes that require precise regulation of speed and torque. In addition to presenting the test results of different ASD ride-through options, the report provides specific examples of other weak links in a process, such as programmable logic controllers, relays, and contactors, which may be integrated with an ASD system.
