Use of biomass/waste either on its own or as part feedstock with coal has several attractions. First, it can provide a revenue stream from materials which otherwise would incur disposal costs. Secondly, it helps to preserve fossil fuel resources. Finally, there is the environmental benefit of not adding to the global atmospheric carbon dioxide burden when firing non-fossil derived fuels. This paper describes preliminary work undertaken at Coal Technology Development Division (CTDD) on the co-gasification of coal and sewage sludge in CTDD`s 0.5 tonne/h pressurized spouted bed gasifier. Gasifier process performance, operability, emissions and solids handling issues have been established for a range of operating conditions and results are presented. Operating performance target criteria for the gasifier as a component of the Air Blown Gasification Cycle have been met with resultant fuel gas calorific values of over 4.0 MJNm{sup {minus}3}, fuel conversion efficiency of 78% and sulphur retention efficiency with sorbent addition of >90%. Results from a further phase of study targeted at increased waste feed rates and differing fuel characteristics are also presented.
