This paper presents the experimental results of agglomeration phenomena in a laboratory scale fluidized bed combustor for burning straw. The reactor was electrically heated and straw was continuously fed by a screw feeder. The concentrations of O{sub 2}, CO{sub 2}, CO and NO, bed temperature and pressure drop over the bed were continuously monitored. Agglomeration of the bed material was marked by a significant decrease of the mean pressure drop over the bed. This study focuses on the influence of important parameters, such as temperature and stoichiometry, on the time at which the bed materials begin to defluidize. The bed materials were sampled regularly and some of them were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The experimental results show that temperature is the most important parameter for agglomeration. It appears that the overall stoichiometry only has minor effect on agglomeration. The results from SEM and EDX analysis show significant differences on the structures and compositions of the agglomerates sampled at different temperatures. Based on the experimental results, two different mechanisms of the agglomeration phenomena are proposed for different temperature levels.
