Title: Use of FBC ashes in no-cement mortars

FBC ashes differ widely from one another and unlike those from PF ashes will not generally meet ASTM Class C requirements for utilization in civil engineering applications. Moreover, no standardization is available to allow would be users to determine their potential for use either as binders or fillers in concrete or road works. This study presents information on the hydraulic and pozzolanic properties of FBC ashes, from no-cement mortar beams made with sand and coal ash mixes, and 2-year-aged. Classical control methods used in the cement industry have been applied to demonstrate the potential of using FBC ash to produce high quality mortars. Given the high sulfate content of FBC ashes, the swelling behavior of immersed beams was followed closely to determine whether deleterious expansion occurred. Stable hydrate formation requires the availability of silicates and aluminates and may be affected by the excess or the lake of calcium compounds such as quick lime and anhydrite. Current results indicate that the addition of PF ash may be effective for the preparation of mortars as the addition of portland cement especially in road works or similar applications.
