The proper functioning of the joint between the carrier casting and the housing axle assembly of a heavy vehicle is critical to the performance of the vehicle`s drivetrain. An analytical procedure to study this joint using a finite element model was developed. This model predicted the maximum slip coefficient at each fastener in the joint required to prevent slip. The critical fasteners identified by the analysis coincided with field observations made on vehicle tests. The analytical model was used to identify the critical design parameters which contribute to the shear loads induced at the joint. These parameters included the material properties, the wall thickness and geometrical shape of the casting and housing structures. A combination of these parameters which minimized the joint shear loads was also identified.
