Forced convection within porous media is encountered in a wide range of applications in many fields that include industry, and agriculture. A model of the transient fluid flow and heat transfer within a packed bed of solids containing two different layers of porous matrices is described. The system relates to an axisymmetric cylindrical packed bed fitted with an axial core of a porous matrix that is different from the surrounding cylindrical shell. The influence of various operating parameters is described. It is shown that numerically predicted results compare well with some experimental data obtained in a laboratory reactor fitted with spherical glass beads.
