Magnetic fusion driven transmutation of nuclear waste (FTW)
- Oak Ridge National Lab., TN (United States)
The possibility of magnetic Fusion driven Transmutation of Waste (FTW) was revisited and discussed recently. Nuclear wastes include all transuranium elements: Pu isotopes (Pu{sup 239-241}), minor actinides separated from the spent fission fuel (Np{sup 237}, Am{sup 241,243}, Cm{sup 244}, etc.), and fissile products (Tc{sup 99}, I{sup 129}). Elimination of these long-life nuclear wastes is necessary for the long-term viability of fission power.
