Burning of wood wastes, agricultural wastes, refuse and other biomass fuels for steam and power generation is having a strong revival in view of the high costs of fossil fuel and disposal on account of environmental requirements. Biomass, after coal and oil, is the largest primary energy source in the world. The most convenient use of energy from biomass is in places where it is formed naturally or where it is produced as a process refuse (e.g. deoiled bran, deoiled cake etc.). India being a predominantly agricultural country, it was but natural for the users to look for biomass fuels which are inexpensive and abundantly available locally. Large amount of biomass used for steam and power generation in India is in the form of agricultural residues. These residues include husks, shells, straws, stalks etc. produced after harvesting the crop. As the crops are normally cultivated with the aid of fertilizers, these residues generally contain higher amounts of sodium/potassium compounds in their ash. Higher concentration of these compounds result in problems like bed agglomeration, slagging on furnace walls/super heater tubes and fouling of heat transfer surfaces. The successful design and operation of a fluidized bed combustor depends on the ability to control and mitigate these ash related problems.
