Ontario Hydro`s renewable energy technologies (RETs) program: ``Learning`` to be renewable
- Ontario Hydro, Toronto, Ontario (Canada)
In April 1995, Ontario Hydro launched its Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) Program as part of its overall Sustainable Energy Development (SED) Strategy. The goal of the RETs Program is to promote and assist the development and marketplace acceptance of RETs. The Program is being delivered via a series of specific elements, including: Research and Development; Business Unit Applications; Remote Communities; Customer Programs; Green Pricing; Local Integrated Resource Planning; Request for Proposals; and Customer Information and Education. Implementing initiatives related to these elements will help to lay the groundwork for the long-term success of RETs through technology development, demonstration and gaining operating experience and commercialization in niche markets. This paper provides an overview of Ontario Hydro`s RETs Program, and discusses some of the successes and problems encountered thus far during program implementation, and how this learning is forcing him to rethink and realign their efforts on RETs.
