Thermodynamic functions of zirconia in fluorite solid solutions of the ZrO{sub 2}-Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} system

Most of the currently used structural ceramics are based on mixed oxides containing zirconium oxide. The performance of these materials usually depends on their preparation conditions. The problem of creating multicomponent materials cannot be solved by empirical sorting of various compositions and synthesis conditions because it involves a multitude of factors. Therefore, in order to obtain the required synthesis products, it is appropriate to use data on phase equilibria and the thermodynamic properties of oxide systems. The purpose of this work is to determine the partial thermodynamic properties of zirconia in fluorite solid solutions (F{sub ss}) of the ZrO{sub 2}-Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} system. Earlier reported experimental data for (ZrO{sub 2}){sub 1-x}(Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}){sub x} solid solutions were obtained using the emf method with fluorine-ion and oxygen-ion electrolytes. As the data reported earlier are incomplete or contradictory, it is appropriate to study the system further and to compare the results with calculated thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams of the ZrO{sub 2}-Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} system.
