Voltage sags and momentary interruptions are the most common power quality variations affecting industrial and commercial end users. Solving these problems will require a great deal of cooperating between electric utilities, equipment manufacturers, and end users. The end users must take advantage of the voltage sag performance information that electric utilities can make available to them and evaluate the overall economics of improving their productivity. This report focuses on the static transfer switch, which can be a very attractive option for improving performance when system architecture and configurations are appropriate. These switches have been available for low voltage applications as well. These devices allow customer loads or facilities to be transferred from one feed to a backup feed before any equipment is affected. This report summarizes the operation of the static transfer switch and how it can be used to protect critical loads from power system variations. Additionally, the requirements associated with proper operation along with various circuit topologies are presented. A manufacturer survey covering the specifications associated with the device was performed and is summarized. Also, actual applications of the static transfer switch are included along with a comparison with other power conditioning technologies. 36 figs., 6 tabs.
