The Glenridge Quarry Landfill Site is located in an urban area on the brow of the Niagara Escarpment in a former rock quarry. This municipal landfill is owned and operated by the City of St. Catharines, Ontario which has a population of 130,000. The landfill has a clay liner and is equipped with leachate, storm water and groundwater collection systems. There are a number of leachate management issues that currently, and will continue to present challenges in the future. The issues discussed in this paper include: maintaining the aging leachate collection system (circa 1976) and it`s monitoring network; reducing the volume of effluent discharged to the sanitary sewer, which presently includes leachate, storm water and groundwater; accommodating variable effluent chemistry resulting from changing leachate quality and storm flow; and, pretreatment of the leachate in the sewer to prevent odors in the residential community adjacent to the landfill. Resolution of these leachate management issues involves a mix of technical innovation, traditional engineering and political solutions. Technical innovation is required to maintain and repair the aging leachate collection system. Traditional engineering solutions have been implemented to control leachate odors. Community education and political solutions are needed to allow off-site discharge of clean surface water and groundwater which presently is combined with the leachate and treated.
