The evolution of an environmental audit program from initial formation, through corporate merger and re-engineering

Cinergy is the 13th largest electric and gas energy services company in the United States. Cinergy was formed by the merger of PSI Energy (PSI) and Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company (CG and E) in 1994. Cinergy serves 1.8 million electric and gas customers in central Indiana and the metropolitan Cincinnati area. Both companies had environmental audit programs at the time of the merger. PSI`s was initiated in 1993, and CG and E`s was in operation since 1988. This paper focuses briefly on the development and implementation of PSI`s audit program. It then discusses the processes used to merge and operate the program. The successes and barriers of the first year`s operation are highlighted. Finally, the effects of the corporate restructuring are discussed as they relate to the programs changing customer base, current and long range goals of the audit program.
