The impacts of local residential density, shopping, proximity, pedestrian friendliness and transit service on auto ownership and vehicle miles traveled are being measured in the whole Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco regions. The measure of vehicle miles traveled uses household travel surveys and smog-check odometer readings. the preliminary results, using the household travel surveys, show substantial reductions in auto ownership and vehicle miles traveled at higher densities, closer proximities, higher local shopping, more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly neighborhoods and better public transit service. An analysis by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission shows how to reduce air pollution in the San Francisco Bay Area by increasing residential and employment densities, improving transit service and applying parking cash-out. Specific measures to reap the benefits of these results are presented.
